Jodhpur, a Treasure Trove of Culture & History

Jodhpur, a captivating city in Rajasthan, with its iconic blue cityscape and the majestic Mehrangarh Fort perched above, embodies the rich heritage of the Maharajas who once ruled here. The city pulsates with vibrant events such as Polo matches, the Riff Music Festival that resonates with melodies from around the world and the ethereal World Sacred Spirit Festival that celebrates spiritual music and traditions. Jodhpur’s transformation has been quite a journey…

Tracing back the Origins

Bungalow 2 isn’t just a century-and-a-half-old structure, it is a living chronicle of its past. Once an integral part of Raikabagh Palace, the former residence of the royal family of Jodhpur. Stepping inside this home is like embarking on a visual journey that harmonizes British colonial influences with the rich aesthetics of the local architecture and culture. It is not merely a place to lodge, it is an immersive experience that seamlessly blends the warm embrace of an ancestral home with the splendid characteristic of a contemporary boutique accommodation.

A Heritage of Valor

The story of our family’s association with Bungalow 2 unfolds against the backdrop of the Second World War, reaching back as far as we can trace. During that time, the present owner’s father, Captain Dungar Singh, an officer in the Maharaja of Jodhpur’s army, found himself stationed overseas with his unit, The Jodhpur Sardar Infantry, offering crucial support to the British war effort. Post-war, this young officer emerged decorated with the Military Cross and various other medals for his exceptional bravery, a recognition bestowed upon him by the King of England. In acknowledgment of his dedicated service, His Highness Maharaja Umaid Singh Ji of Jodhpur honored him with various commendations, and among them, Bungalow 2 stands as a distinguished accolade, a testament to Captain Dungar Singh’s gallant contributions.

Our Rooms

Our average room rate is INR 13000 + Taxes

We have five Heritage Rooms on the first floor built around a central courtyard. The room sizes ranging from 225 to 240 sq ft, each coupled with a spacious bathroom. Four rooms come with king-size double beds and one room is twin-bedded. Two of these rooms (the Twin and a Double) share a Terrace overlooking the Garden.

Dine under the
Historic Arches

All meals get served at the Gol-Kamra Dining (where “Gol” signifies round and “Kamra” translates to room). The nomenclature draws inspiration from the two circular stone arches supporting the stone-roof structure. The archives that adorn the walls of Gol-Kamra will take you on a nostalgic trip of the Raj in India, in the early 1900s. One can also enjoy the meals in the garden right next to the Gol Kamra or on the Gol-Kamra Terrace. The Gol-Kamra Terrace is a semi covered roof top lounge in an intimate setting with the view of The Umaid Bhawan Palace. The dining experience extends beyond the plate, offering a blend of architectural elegance and natural serenity. Our guests get to eat the same food that is prepared for us in our own family kitchen.

A Traditional Touch

The Rajput lifestyle, heritage and culture are still reflected in the architecture and interiors you will see in our home today. The cultural mix of the noble Rajput families and the British (who have lived here) have left an indelible influence on this home. Step into the world of Bungalow 2, a place where history is cherished, and tradition is revered. Our journey to restore this remarkable property was not merely about refurbishing a building – it was a labor of love that sought to pay homage to the past while welcoming the comforts of the present.

A wonderful, small, boutique hotel in a very convenient location. We enjoyed our stay at Bungalow 2, loved the attention to detail by the owners, loved the home cooking meals and the feeling of the place with respect to its historical heritage. The rooms are comfortable (ask for one with a balcony), the rooftop terrace a nice place with a view for an evening drink or a morning coffee. A very good value. I highly recommend it.

We've just returned from Jodhpur, India, after staying twelve days at the Bungalow 2 residence. I have to premise I'm not new to India and that from 1981 onwards I've experienced a wide range of different accomodations. From luxurious 5 star hotels to very modest guesthouses I've gone through quite a number of them and this is the first time I felt everything ...............

We had the pleasure of spending time with Rajat and Suzanne last night at their ancestral home. It was an awesome real Indian home experience with food that is truly out of the Indian family kitchen. Our hosts had plenty of Jodhpur history to share. They were warm, inviting and made us feel home and the experience was similar to visiting an Indian family................

Phantastic old house, very beautifully restored. There are not too many rooms, so we felt like staying with friends, actually. We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed it. Nice rooms, very clean and cozy. Susi and Rajat, our hosts, were superfriedly. They even organized a cooking event with a great Indian cook. And I liked the breakfast!

Stayed for a week with my family. It was important to me that my Kids, who are born and brought up in the USA, can feel and absorb the tradition and history of Jodhpur which is more than some Insta posts of forts and palaces. And Bungalow 2 did not disappoint. Very well-done decor, ambiance, and a home-like feel................

Bungalow 2 in Jodhpur is a wonderful place to stay, relax, eat, cook...and feel home as well as history. All rooms are made with that special touch of someone, who really loved to do a great job. The quiet location is next to historic buildings & there is a private garden too - but it is not even a 10 minutes autorikshaw ride from Sardar market as well as very near to Maid Bhavan Palace. ...............

Thank you for the wonderful preparation of lunch and the cooking demonstration on November 1st, 2022. We were very enthusiastic about the warm, family welcome. You can see that behind the concept of Bungalow2 there is a lot of historical awareness but above all passion. A little gem that you can definitely recommend. Good luck for the future. Greetings Claudia and Robert.
